IPTV EPG Explained: How the TV Guide Works (and How to Fix It)

The EPG — electronic programme guide — is what turns a raw list of channels into television: programme names, start times, what’s on next, and the grid you scroll through with the remote. When it works, you never think about it. When it shows “No information”, the whole service feels broken even though the streams are fine. Here is how the guide actually works and how to repair it when it goes blank.

Where the guide data comes from

EPG data travels separately from the video. Your provider compiles listings for thousands of channels into a feed (the common format is XMLTV), and your player downloads that feed on a schedule — typically once or twice a day. Three parts must line up:

1. The provider’s EPG feed — with an Xtream Codes login the player usually finds it automatically; with a bare M3U playlist you sometimes have to paste an EPG URL yourself.
2. The channel-to-guide mapping — every channel carries an ID that must match an entry in the feed. Mismatched IDs are why one channel shows no data while its neighbours are fine.
3. Your player’s refresh schedule — data older than a day drifts into wrong titles and times.

“No information” on every channel

That is a loading problem, not a data problem:

• In the player, find the EPG or guide settings and press Update/Reload EPG manually.
• Logged in via M3U? Check whether the EPG URL field is empty — ask your provider for the address, or switch to the Xtream Codes login, which wires the guide up automatically.
• Give a first-time sync a few minutes: a full feed for a big line-up is many megabytes.

Guide is there, but times are shifted

A guide that is exactly one or several hours off is a timezone clash between the feed and the device. Every serious player has an “EPG time shift” or offset setting — set it to your zone (or to 0 if the device clock is already correct). Germany/Central Europe viewers watching a UK-referenced feed typically need +1.

Guide slows the app down

On modest devices a full EPG for tens of thousands of channels costs memory. Two settings fix the lag without losing the guide where it matters: limit EPG storage to 1–2 days, and build a favourites group with the channels you actually watch — the player then renders the grid for dozens of channels instead of the full catalogue. Catch-up: the EPG’s bonus feature

On channels marked with a catch-up icon, the guide is clickable backwards — pick yesterday’s programme from the grid and it plays from the archive. If catch-up buttons never appear, your player may simply have the feature off; look for “catch-up” or “archive” in its settings.
